It is amazing how quickly we ushered in 2016. This year’s headlines and sound bites already reflect that it will be unpredictable and ever-changing. However, what is predictable and never changing is Hampton Roads Black Media Professional’s commitment to provide scholarships to eligible African American students and to support HRBMP’s people, priorities and programs.

HRBMP is the area’s oldest and largest organization for minorities in media and communications. It is the affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, Inc.  Since its inception in 1982, HRBMP has provided more than $130,000 in scholarships to young men and women who have truly benefited from the generous contributions of our corporate community.  We remain grateful.

HRBMP members continue to produce and participate in programs that assist local high schools, colleges and universities. Our members serve as

Karen Eure Wilson

HRBMP President

mentors to students interested in media careers, support the professional development of media professionals and coordinate town halls and community forums to facilitate meaningful conversations to highlight the good and help resolve issues of concern.

We have much to accomplish during the next several months. While our flagship event continues to be our HRBMP Scholarship Program, this year’s agenda also includes a Town Hall on Bullying and Racism in Public Schools.  HRBMP will also participate in the 2016 NABJ regional conference in Baltimore, MD, One Year After Freddie Gray:  Navigating Social Justice in Journalism, and in the NABJ joint national convention with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Inc. in Washington D.C. We have much to do to remain a relevant and current resource for our community.

We need your help.  We are asking you to be a financial partner with us. Your sponsorship would greatly enhance our efforts to make a significant impact within our area.  HRBMP is a 509(a) (1) organization and contributions are tax deductible under Virginia state law.
